1926 – Poultney Man Dies in Slate Quarry

May 14, 1926, The Poultney Journal: Nicholas Stefano, an Italian immigrant and Poultney resident, was killed when 150 tons of rock fell and covered him as well as a Fair Haven man. The man from Fair Haven survived with serious injuries but Nicholas was confirmed dead upon finding his body beneath the rubble. Slate work was very dangerous and this was not a unique event. Many people were seriously injured or killed in Vermont's bustling Slate industry. See original news clipping.
