The Poultney Historical Society will hold a simultaneous public reading of the Declaration of Independence at 6:00 p.m. local time on July 8, 2026 at the East Poultney Schoolhouse, marking the 250th anniversary of its very first public reading. The roughly 10-minute reading reenacts Colonel John Nixon’s historic July 8, 1776, proclamation outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
Communities across the nation will be a part of this synchronized event, known as Sharing the Spirit of America, will take place at historic sites, libraries, and courthouses in all fifty states.
