“Ashes for Cash” program

Historian Patricia Moore, PhD, spoke on November 15, 2009 with a program called  Ashes for Cash: 1820’s Poultney as seen through the Northern Spectator. The program was a lively slide show and talk, depicting a period when America’s economy was both cash and barter. It was held at the United Methodist Church on Main Street in the ground floor meeting room.

As experienced in 1820s Poultney, the era was seen through the lens of the advertisements and articles of the Northern Spectator newspaper where Horace Greeley served his apprenticeship. Before going on to found his own paper, The New York Tribune. Greeley and George Jones (who would become founder of the New York Times) were teenage friends together in East Poultney.

The event was free and open to the public and refreshments were served immediately after Dr. Moore’s presentation.
